Notes and Notifications

The girls played AWESOME yesterday. We just had a few small breakdowns which gave them the opportunity to score. You probably noticed that the other team did NOT have any subs on their bench. They all played the full 60 minutes. They had good stamina and fitness. This is still a weakness for some of our girls. A higher fitness level increases the amount of time that a girl plays during a game. Being able to keep up with their mark is extremely important. There is a higher chance for the other team to score if we are not marking them.

We also need some more use of step overs, drag backs, and give & gos (I like to refer to these as “Fancy Footwork”). These three skills are necessary for avoiding running into the opposing team. Remember what Pele said, “When you control the ball, you control the score.” The more we keep the ball in our possession, the more chances we will have to get up the field and take shots on goal.

Our passing has become much stronger and the girls are definitely working together very well as a team. I am so proud of their vast progress since November.

Due to Early Release there will NOT be practice today.

Our game on Thursday is AWAY against Airport at 6:00pm. The bus will leave from the MCHS by the gym at 4:30pm.

The girls should be there by 4:00pm for food and drinks. They will need their black jerseys, shorts, and black socks. Make sure they double check for their shinguards. We are the only team going, so we should be back between 8 and 8:30pm.

Here is their web page: http://ahs.lex2.groupfusion.net

Here is their address and phone number: 1315 Boston Avenue West Columbia, South Carolina 29170 Phone 803-822-5600

There will be an OPTIONAL practice during SPRING BREAK on Thursday, April 7th from 10:00am to 1:00pm. Please talk with your daughters and let me know if they will or will not be attending. Please make sure they run and touch the ball during break.

I know that the following girls will NOT be able to practice:
Leah McCullough

*We only have 3 games left in our season. We are very sad to not be able to have the 8th grade field trip girls for the 13th and 15th. We will need their jerseys, so that they alternates can get a chance to play in those games. It would be great if they can get those to me by Monday, April 11th.

Where are we on the Pasta Party? • Parents and the girls are invited.
• Possibly on a Saturday afternoon? When do the 8th grade field trip girls leave for Washington? I would like to include them even though they will not be able to play.
• Maria’s mother would like to bring plates and silverware
• Can someone bring cups?
• Do we need someone to bring deserts?
• I had the idea that we could tye dye some shirts and put their names and numbers on them. I can pick up shirts, the tye dye and puffy paint supplies for this. Would each of you be willing to donate $2 towards this?

Mrs. Cromer is graciously providing a pizza party for the girls for defeating Newberry. I was thinking that we might hold this afterschool at MCMS the day before our AWAY Newberry Game, Thursday. Mrs. Cromer, what are your thoughts?

As always: Thank you for your continued support for the girls and everything that you do.

Fri: GAME DAY AT NEWBERRY be at the MCHS gym by 4:00pm.

Spring Break is approaching and one of our weaknesses is FITNESS. We are being outsprinted on the field and unable to keep a high pace stamina while on the field. Please take time each day to do some suicides or run a mile or more. Good fitness will also help guard against injuries. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE work on your fitness as much as possible.

Mid Carolina Soccer Team Rules and Expectations 2011

I handed this out to the girls in a paper copy form at the beginning of the season. I apologize if you did not get this.

Parents and players need to read and be aware of all rules and expectations

Commitment at practice and games
You are always expected to be at practice and at games UNLESS you are home sick, have a death in the family, or have a family emergency. Even injured players should come to show their support unless instructed otherwise by a doctor.

If something else interferes and you know in advance please have a parent write a note in advance. Please communicate with me in regards to all of these issues.

Missing practice for homework is NOT an excuse. Being a student athlete means you need to find a balance between sports and academics. If you are unable to have passing grades then sports may not be a good fit for you at this time.

Unexcused or missed practices may result in game suspension or dismissal from the team.

Behavior
You are expected to behave appropriately in the classroom, on the field, on the bus, and in the community. Any bullying behavior (physical, verbal, in writing, etc) will be considered as a threat to our team’s reputation and could result in immediate dismissal. Your behavior is a reflection of our soccer team. Anything that is embarrassing or detrimental to the team can result in game suspension or dismissal from the team.
(problems with classroom or school behavior, ISS, OSS, etc can result in game suspension or dismissal from the team)

Any players caught with drugs or alcohol will immediately be dismissed from the soccer team. Any player who is arrested during the season will be immediately dismissed from the soccer team. These are very serious offenses and they will not be tolerated.

SPORTSMANSHIP is extremely important for both the student athletes and the family members.
Soccer is an emotional game and it is easy to get caught up in the moment. We all need to control our emotions, stay positive, and accept the decisions of the coach and the referees. Coaches and referees are only human and we make mistakes too. Understand that there will be bad calls made during the games.

DO NOT trash talk opponents or strike out physically in an inappropriate manner. Soccer is a rough, contact sport, but there are ways to be aggressive without being a danger to other players on the field. We will learn more about this as the season progresses.

Please NEVER go to a referee during or after a game to complain, ask questions, etc. This action can result in MC being put on suspension. Remember your actions and behaviors create the MC reputation.

I will expect my players to thank the referee after each game even if we do not agree with some of the calls made.

If we win, we will not boast or brag and I expect my players to line up and shake hands with the other team and say, “good game.”

Please NEVER go to the opposing coaches and complain, ask questions, etc. I expect my players to say, “good game.”

When a player is ejected from a game they may get a 2 game suspension. This is according to high school league rules. Coaches are fined and suspended if we get ejected from a game.

Uniforms and Misc
You will need black socks, white socks, and NOCSAE shin guards. Cleats are necessary for game playing players.
Everyone is expected to help as a ball retriever during games.
Everyone is asked to help with food – snacks for away games.

The girls will be participating in “PSYCH-UPS” these are small tokens to Psych-Up their peers before a game. (This is optional)
These consist of:
A brown paper lunch bag (decorated with Psych-Up sayings)
A piece of fruit
Water, Gatorade, Powerade, etc (no soda please)
Some candy
Granola bars, Nutrigrain Bars, pretzels, etc

OR feel free to create your own Psych-Up bag idea. This is just a great way to get the players psyched for a game and it also gives them a snack before the games.

Playing time:
Playing time is at the discretion of the coaches. Please understand that coaches are with their players everyday at practices. We know which players are in better physical shape, as well as, those players who have higher skill levels. We will do our best to allow all game playing players to play during a game, but please do not question why your daughter is sitting on the bench longer than another player. You just have to trust that we, as coaches, know what we are doing.

This year we have 20 uniforms for the 20 game playing players. There are 2 alternates in case any game playing players are injured or ineligible. The remaining players on the team are practice players only and will not play in any games this year. If they choose to continue to practice with us they will gain the physical fitness and skill level and be more likely to make the team next year. They are also eligible to come to the games with the rest of the team.

This is the first year for an all girls soccer team. It is important that we come out strong and let everyone know that we DESERVE to be here. If we can do that we may be able to add a girls varsity next year. This means more need for girl soccer players in the future.

I am looking forward to a GREAT season. I know we have some wonderful ladies in personality and in talent.

GO REBELS!
Coach Heather Mann

Parent Email Distribution List

Hello JV Girls Soccer Parents. It has come to my attention that the parents would like an email distribution list to go along with the soccer blog and my school facebook page. I am happy to do this for all of you. Unfortunately, I only have three emails at this time. I have requested the girls to get their parent's email addresses, but if you know any of them please let me know. My email is hmann@newberry.k12.sc.us.

I apologize for any confusion or issues that have arisen so far. Please be patient with me because I am learning as I go along. I promise to make things as easy for you all as possible. It is always a challenge to begin any new program.

For any questions or concerns in regards to the schedule please feel free to contact the MC High School Athletic Director: Coach Alexander. He creates the schedules for the sports teams.

Please remember that games do cost money and that you are never mandated to participate if the cost is too great. The same goes for equipment or shirts/sweatshirts as well. Coach Alexander would also be better able to explain any fees to you.

Here is the blog web address just in case: www.mcmsgirlssoccer.blogspot.com

The game info can also be found by going to the MCMS athletics tab and then clicking on soccer: Here is the soccer page website that you will see: http://www.newberry.k12.sc.us/mcms/mclark/Soccer.htm

Most of the girls are friends with me on my facebook page, so please feel free to friend me for another way to get any information.

Thank you for all you do for your daughters and for our team!
